Replacement window terms you should know

Replacement windows are no light purchase and it’s always important to go into any purchase such as this with as much knowledge as you can. There are a lot of different terms that replacement window companies use to describe different parts and attributes of windows. These are the terms that we think will help you the most when looking into replacing your current windows:

Sash – is the part of a frame that holds the glass in a window that can be opened

Casing – the trim that fills in the space between a window frame and the wall of a home

Sill – the base of a window frame, often includes a ledge to put decorations

Jamb – the vertical sides of the window frame

Frame – the frame includes both the jab and the sill along with a header for a complete encompass of the window

Panes – the pieces of glass that are placed inside the sash

R-Value – This is the measure of how resistant a window is to incoming heat from outside

EnergyStar – a government backed program that gives each window and some other products a grade based on certain energy related criteria

Single or double hung windows – Both of these windows have two window sashes on top of each other and can either open with one sliding pane or two.

Awning windows – These windows are usually placed above a door or large window

Sliding windows – These windows slide horizontally to open and close

Casement windows – These windows open with the use of a crank and open with a tilt of relatively 45 degrees

There are many more terms that replacement window companies may use, but with this general knowledge, you should be able to get the general idea of what your replacement window specialist is talking about and make a beautiful purchase of a brand new replacement window for your home.
