Getting a replacement roof installed is a large project. This kind of project comes once in a lifetime, so there is usually a lot to learn! Roofing has quite a bit of terms that are solely specific to roofing, so it’s best to get familiar with a couple before your next replacement roof is installed. Here are a couple popular roofing terms.
Roof decking/roof sheathing – These are the wooden planks that make up the framing of your roof.
Roof flashing – Flashing is a thin metal covering that sends water away from certain areas of your roof that need to be protected such as the chimney.
Roof underlayment – underlayment is a felt material that gets put between your roof decking planks and your shingles.
Starter Shingles – These are the shingles that roofing companies start with. They are pre-cut roofing material that goes underneath the first set of actual shingles.
Ridge capping – Ridge capping is trim that gets installed at the top of two parts of a slope to cover what the edges of the shingles cannot.
Rakes – Rakes are the edge of a roof that run at a slope.
Eaves – Eaves are the edge of a roof that run horizontally.
Fascia – This is the vertical finishing edge that connects the roof to things like gutters to allow seamless connection with the rest of the roof.
Drip edge – The Drip edge is the flashing installed at the roof’s rakes and eaves to keep water away from your fascia.
These are just a handful of terms used in the replacement roofing world. There are a ton more but these should get you started if you are looking to replace your roof.
